Webinar: Snapshots of Organizing Across Asia

Date:

Thursday, October 17, 2019 - 9:00pm to Tuesday, December 24, 2024 - 12:42pm

Labor Notes and the International Labor Rights Forum are co-hosting a webinar on October 17 at 9:00 p.m. EST on how labor activists across Asia are building power in the face of multinational corporations.

What are the opportunities and challenges for strengthening solidarity across the region? How can we organize in our own unions to build a movement that can tackle rising inequality across borders? How is state repression impacting how activists organize?

These are some of the questions we hope to discuss with activists from Japan, Myanmar, and the Philippines.

Labor Notes Regional Conference: Building International Solidarity and Defending Labor Activists in Asia

Date:

Friday, August 16, 2019 - 12:00am to Tuesday, December 24, 2024 - 12:42pm

Across Asia, multinational corporations are pushing an agenda of outsourcing, subcontracting, and short-term contracts to minimize their responsibility for labor rights violations and to keep out independent, democratic unions. Throughout the region, millions of migrant workers have few legal protections and face precarious employment and unsafe positions. Migrant fishers and domestic workers frequently face not only institutional discrimination, but also sometimes physical abuse and sexual harassment at the hands of their employers.

2019 Labor Rights Defenders Awards

Date:

Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - 5:30pm to Tuesday, December 24, 2024 - 12:42pm

Our awards ceremony brings together policy leaders, labor activists, and an increasingly diverse group of internationalists who know that human rights and economic justice depend on the ability of workers and their advocates to speak out and defend human rights at work. We honor trailblazers, both nationally and internationally, for their innovation and visionary leadership in labor rights advocacy, from fighting for safe and just working conditions to demanding corporate accountability.

The Jasic Conflagration: Assessing the State of Labor Politics in China

Date:

Friday, April 12, 2019 - 1:00pm to Tuesday, December 24, 2024 - 12:42pm

This symposium will explore the context, causes, and consequences of the Jasic conflict, perhaps China’s most politically consequential labor movement of the decade. A variety of speakers will draw out how the incident has implicated so many social actors - students, feminists, leftists, NGOs, and lawyers - and to think about what this case reveals about shifting politics in the Xi era. Given the intensity and breadth of the crackdown, we will also reflect on possibilities for advancing labor rights in this newly repressive environment.

Friday, February 1, 2019 - 12:30pm to Tuesday, December 24, 2024 - 12:42pm

Workers in Bangladesh face violence when voicing legitimate complaints about how little they take home after a day’s work. Show your solidarity with garment workers by joining us for a demonstration at the Consulate General of Bangladesh!
